Los Angeles Fashion Week SS13 – Concept LA

Belle N. Matisse SS13

Alexandria Norman offered her label’s spring collection informally, and somewhat fittingly so. Belle N. Matisse is about luxurious, simple, and edgy modern sportswear. What seemed to encapsulate the attitude of Norman is going for was a cream blazer matched with tailored shorts, and paired with a cropped black t-shirt, an assortment of necklaces, a menswear inspired hat, and similarly inspired shoes.

martinMARTIN SS13

The husband and wife team presented a collection, as usual, that is a revolt against everything quintessentially West Coast. Entitled “Structure and Anti-Structure,” the garments were androgynous, utilitarian and avant garde. The models were sent down the runway looking disheveled, with tangled hair and shades of red on both the eyes and lips.  Near the end of the show, things got lighter, with a selection of more fluid fabrics, sheer panels, and popping red pieces.

NAMI SS13

Nami’s designer Sarah Ahn has a PhD in Neuroscience, so there is no doubting she brings a unique perspective to fashion. There was cozy, slouchy knitwear paired with leather leggings, and accessories with long, thick clumps of leather string. Near the end she moved towards outerwear, playing with leather, lengths and construction. The models were styled with over-the-top bouffants, retro curled ponytails, and sultry false lashes.

Nuvula SS13

The two main goals of the designers at Nuvula are environmental sustainability and avant-garde design. They incorporate poetry, literature, painting and performance art in the inspiration for their designs. The set for their presentation reflected this love the avant-garde and performance art with colorfully patterned pedestals for the models to stand on and around. The collection was 60′s and 70′s inspired, but still modern and sexy. There were precisely constructed peplums and short shift dresses, a printed kaftan and a sheer, ethereal, butterfly-printed gown.
