Following a dark and sporty run last season, Rebecca Minkoff turned to Latin America for inspiration for her Spring 2014 collection. One of the earliest looks included a t-shirt that conveyed her theme most easily; it read “Let’s go to Mexico.” Not taking her inspiration too literally, the designer turned to Caroline Issa and Bianca Jagger for the colorful, wearable collection. Eye-catching embroidery in a rainbow of colors and intricate cutouts gave the tropical theme a modern twist, keeping her signature tomboyish look fresh and new. The looks were romantic but tough and complemented by a simple beauty look: braids à la Frida Kahlo, lined eyes, and heavy blush. Janelle Monae, perhaps a modern poster-child for tough and elegant femininity, performed two songs during the show. It opened with Lindsey Wixson in an athletic top, floral embroidered miniskirt, and leather stiletto boots with elegant cutouts. Wixson closed the show in a fluid floral dress that moved diaphanously behind her on the runway. The two looks were perfect representations of the hard-edged, but still feminine theme that Minkoff was going for.
